Kaiyuan Xu

Master of Design in Fashion, Body and Garment

Kaiyuan Xu was born in Shanghai, China. In 2018, he graduated with a BA in Fashion from Coventry University in Singapore, and continued his studies toward competing his Master’s degree in Design, Body and Garment (MDes) at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, graduating in 2023.

A passionate fashion designer, Xu specializes in cutting-edge and staunchly anti-commercial clothes that serve to stir unformed deep emotions. He contends that it’s not about shunning the mass trend, but about discovering something that is truly distinct to the garments.

His current work conveys the concept of the never-ending of time, suggesting there is no such thing as death when it comes to universal cosmic energy. His aesthetic springs from the perspective of biological instinct, mimicing the construction of insects which is symmetric and spiraling, integrating his intuitive aesthetic from an automatism perspective into the design.
