Miguel Gutierrez is multi-disciplinary artist based in Lenapehoking/Brooklyn, NY and Tovaangar/Los Angeles. His performance work has been presented internationally in over sixty cities in venues such as the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Festival d’Automne/Paris, MCA Chicago, the Walker Art Center, and in the 2014 Whitney Biennial. During his time at SAIC, he has created a collection of drawings, on paper and walls, that addresses themes of sex, desire, penetration, absence, grief, and fragmentation of the body. He is a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, United States Artists Fellowship, Foundation for Contemporary Arts Award, four NY Dance and Performance “Bessie” Awards, and a 2016 Doris Duke Artist Award. His podcast Are You For Sale? examines the ethical entanglements between money and art making. He is an Associate Professor of Choreography at UCLA in the department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance.

My installation, Metonymically Yours, will be a collection of drawings, on paper and walls, that address overlapping themes of sex, desire, penetration, absence, grief, and fragmentation of the body. Using pencil and chalk pastel, I create crude images of camboys (internet sex workers who masturbate for prolonged periods of time in response to tips) partially covered with stripes of color that match their skin tones, in various arrangements on the wall that echo the rectangularity of computer screens. In certain instances, the drawings extend from the paper onto the wall itself, and the paper is removed, leaving rectilinear traces of bodies unseen. Haunting these figures is the presence/absence of my dead father, who appears in symbolic forms amongst the drawings.
