Ricardo Vilas Freire

Bachelors of Fine Art

Ricardo Vilas Freire is a Brazilian interdisciplinary artist whose work plays with notions of care, usefulness, and labor into actions that joke with human behavior conventions. He believes failure has poetic value, constantly creating situations where things will fall apart when activated by human interaction. He likes to partner, ending up with systems of communication relying on intuitive problem-solving in performance. He believes in the truthfulness of live decision-making, and the immediate environment as a constant collaborator. He uses objects as props questioning the meaningfulness of daily life rituals while being engaged with them.
Ricardo has shown works at the Dislocated Video-Performance Festival 2022 Colombia edition (Bogotá) and India edition (Goa), the National Museum of Mexican Art (Chicago), Circle Contemporary (Chicago), Mayfield (Chicago), Co-Prosperity Sphere (Chicago), No Nation Art Lab (Chicago), Compound Yellow (Chicago), and the 2022 MdW fair at Mana Contemporary (Chicago).
