Samara is a poet and fiber artist who explores how text interacts and reacts with the body. She examines how we read, don’t read, and misread language; and how we dissolve, disseminate and dissipate stories. Samara embeds language into hidden or undisclosed parts of handmade quilts, tapestries, and garments constructed from fabric objects from the women in her family. She and her family collectively weave, knit, embroider, dye, and stitch stories of ancestry, ecology, grief and healing.

Each garment that I own has been handed down to me from my sister, mother, or grandmother. In our family, clothing is a language. It is a figure of speech where the former figure may be absent, yet their form remains. I work into these fabrics, calling to transcontinental tales woven into warp threads and Guyanese recipes saturating frayed cuffs.
