Master of Fine Arts in Studio, Film, Video, New Media, and Animation

Sebastian Bruno-Harris is an artist working with assemblages of everyday objects and materials in Chicago. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and raised between Buenos Aires and South Florida, Sebastian studied at Florida Atlantic University earning his BFA in sculpture in 2016. He is currently pursuing an MFA in the FVNMA program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Sebastian’s work has been exhibited in Florida at the Ritter Art Gallery, Boca Raton; Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, Lake Worth; Fritz Gallery, West Palm Beach; and FATVillage Projects, Ft. Lauderdale. He has exhibited nationally at Leidy Gallery at Fred Lazarus IV Center, Baltimore, MD; Clutch Gallery, Chicago; and Chicago Art Department. Sebastian was a year-long artist-in-residence at Chicago Art Department from 2020 to 2021.

At the core of my practice is a desire to harness the feeling you get when you look at something ordinary and it strikes you as new and strange. In the pursuit of that
desire, I make assemblages that lie somewhere between imagined landscapes, systems, and devices, by using materials such as plants, found objects, photographs, videos, and miniatures. Using these materials I find ways of bringing attention to how objects can be connected and regarded in simultaneous, entangled conditions; as signifiers siphoning different functions, contexts, narratives, and meanings, and through which different places, states of mind, and preoccupations can link and consolidate into abstract, whimsical scenes. My interest in pursuing this method of working is to make fictional models of ordinary affective encounters as ways of examining media forms, cultural framings, and meaning-making processes. My aim is to make work that helps ground people into appreciating their surroundings by providing methods for noticing and contemplating the endless, kaleidoscopic ways in which things are connected – be they objects, thoughts, feelings, impressions, or dreams.
