Master of Fine Arts in Studio, Sculpture

My work investigates historical and contemporary avenues of preservation. In particular, I probe the mechanisms that facilitate these pursuits – the forms and actions that serve to maintain preservation. I sculpt against the institutional vernacular of a museological display reiterating that the gallery is a non-neutral place. The white cube is a built environment that manifests power. Expanding on post-colonial theory, my work critiques aspects of institutional preservation as an extension of Western civilization – its colonial illusion of power and ultimate frailty. If the level of maintenance required to sustain a system is relative to its fragility, my work illuminates the constant necessary actions to sustain and uphold its construction. Identifying these moments of porosity, which then require maintenance, allows these systems to be seen as choices rather than inevitabilities.
