Master of Fine Arts in Studio, Visual Communication Design (Graphic Design)

Tanvi Dev is a multidisciplinary designer interested in interrogating the role of language in design and design in language. Her practice largely focuses on researching and challenging the boundaries of experience, service & type design within the context of cultural sustainability and climate change. Another common theme in her work is inclusivity and accessibility.

She holds a Bachelor’s of Design from MIT Avantika University and is currently pursuing Master’s in Visual Communication at the School of Art Institute of Chicago.

Sing, Play, Write – Materializing Language Revitalization

This project aims to investigate the possibility of drawing together revitalization material, archival documentation, and accessible approaches to language learning at different pedagogical levels for two endangered Inuit languages of the Arctic: Inuktitut & Kalaallisut. This project is supported by the Arts, Science + Culture Graduate Collaboration Grant.

Invisible Canvases of Everyday Life

Physical data visualization for tree interactions with other species (termites, sapsucker birds, lichen & moss) in a fluid tangible medium.

City Access, Webflow, Figma, code HTML CSS

CITY ACCESS is an accessibility tool designed with a focus on experience & interaction design practices in accordance with web accessibility guidelines set by ADA, WCAG 2. The project involves wireframing, journey mapping, design research among other things. Mia Mingus describes Access intimacy as 'That elusive, hard to describe feeling when someone else “gets” your access needs. It is the effort for a person with disability to get access to the access they require to successfully operate in society’. CITY ACCESS is a medium for making access intimate to persons with disability, through reduction of steps involved in user journey maps. The site was built on Webflow + custom code, prototyped in Figma.

‘Where am I in this’ is an interactive art project that questions language in human rights documents. It is an immersive space for audience to read, evaluate, and reflect the absence of other genders in these documents. Redaction is a practice that removes the reader’s access to information. The panels in the space redact gendered words, reducing accessing to their meaning, becoming incomplete. Just like the documents become incomplete for those genders who were thought as ‘secondary’, ‘not important’ or’ not necessary’. ‘25+ Human Rights Documents’ is a book by J. Paul published at the Center for the Study of Human Rights at Columbia University. The book contains most Human Rights documents. The book mentions 'his' 117 times whereas ‘she’ appears 5 times and only in one document - CONVENTION ON THE RIGHTS OF THE CHILD Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 20 November 1989, Entered into force on 2 September 1990, in accordance with Article 49.
