Kyel Joi Brooks is a poet and screenwriter living in Chicago’s Historic Bronzeville neighborhood. Her thesis work is a collection of poems inspired by Gwendolyn Brooks’ first collection of published work, “A Street in Bronzeville.” Kyel aims to continue the conversation that started in 1945 about the city’s Black Metropolis. She is proud be a story-teller who gets to preserve and uphold the long, rich history. Kyel writes honeyed sentiments about her young, tender romance as she immortalizes the community and her neighbors.
