Sumire Taniai was born in Yamaguchi, the westernmost prefecture of the main island of Japan, where she spent the first half of her life. She received a BFA degree in painting from University of Missouri in 2016 and currently attends School of the Art Institute of Chicago as a painting and drawing MFA candidate.
