Palas por Pistolas

Pedro Reyes is a Mexican transdisciplinary artist who integrates sculpture, architecture, video, performance, and participation in his projects. His works aim to increase individual or collective agency in social, environmental, political, or educational situations.
Palas por Pistolas [Guns into Shovels] is an ongoing project by Pedro Reyes that was first initiated in 2008 in Culiacán, a city in northern Mexico that registers a high rate of gun-related deaths. Beginning with a campaign for citizens to voluntarily donate their firearms, Reyes facilitated a public process to break apart the weapons and have the metal melted to become shovels, which were, in turn, distributed to a number of art institutions and public schools for planting trees.
The Chicago iteration of Palas por Pistolas was developed in 2017 as part of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Oaks of North Lawndale initiative inspired by Joseph Beuys’s work 7,000 Oaks. Through the Office of Engagement at SAIC, students, faculty, alumni, and staff have been working with the City of Chicago and the North Lawndale community to reimagine the neighborhood as a verdant, peaceful, and tree-lined place.
Reyes worked with SAIC and North Lawndale community members to undertake the process of melting down weapons waste confiscated by the Chicago Police Department, and shape them into ingots. Lawndale Forge took these metal ingots and smithed them into a unique series of 30 artistic shovel heads. Once they cooled, they were attached to wooden handles milled from local ash trees felled as a result of the emerald ash borer beetle plague. The ash handles were prepared by youth involved in woodworking programs at the Greater West Town Training Partnerships.
In September 2017, SAIC hosted a community celebration in the parking lot of SAIC’s satellite campus at Homan Square. SAIC’s mobile foundry and Lawndale Forge were installed in the lot and Reyes oversaw the culmination of the Chicago iteration of Palas por Pistolas inaugurating Oaks of North Lawndale. As a symbolic act, community members used the shovels made from confiscated weapons to dig holes and plant the first ten trees of the Oaks of North Lawndale initiative, along with this, limestone blocks were placed adjacent to each tree. Reyes conceives of this entire process as a transformation of an agent of death into an agent of life.

Pedro Reyes es un artista transdisciplinario mexicano que integra la escultura, la arquitectura, el video, la performance, y la participación en sus proyectos. Su trabajo promueve el empoderamiento individual o colectivo en situaciones sociales, ambientales, políticas, o educativas.
Palas por Pistolas es un proyecto que Pedro Reyes inició en 2008 en Culiacán, una ciudad en el norte de México que registra una alta tasa de muertes en relación con armas de fuego. Comenzando con una campaña para que los ciudadanos donaran voluntariamente sus armas de fuego o pistolas, Reyes promovió que se hiciera un proceso público para destruir las armas y hacer que el metal fuera derretido para convertirse en palas. A la vez, las palas se distribuyeron a varias instituciones artísticas y escuelas públicas para plantar árboles.
Palas por Pistolas se desarrolló en Chicago, durante el 2017 como parte de la iniciativa Oaks of North Lawndale de School of the Art Institute la cual está inspirada en 7,000 Oaks de Joseph Beuys. A través de la Office of Engagement de SAIC, estudiantes, profesores, ex-alumnos y empleados han trabajado con el municipio de Chicago y la comunidad de North Lawndale para reimaginar el vecindario como un lugar verde, pacífico y arbolado.
Reyes trabajó con SAIC y los miembros de la comunidad de North Lawndale para llevar a cabo el proceso de derretir restos de armas confiscadas por el Departamento de Policía de Chicago, y convertirlos en lingotes. Lawndale Forge tomó estos lingotes y los convirtió en esta serie 30 palas originales. Una vez que se enfriaron, fueron unidos a los mangos de madera triturada de árboles locales cortados debido a una plaga de escarabajo. Los mangos de fresno fueron preparados por jóvenes inscritos en los programas de carpintería en Greater West Town Training Partnerships.
En septiembre de 2017, SAIC organizó una celebración comunitaria en el estacionamiento del campus satélite de SAIC en Homan Square. La fundición móvil de SAIC y Lawndale Forge fueron instaladas, Pedro Reyes supervisó el fin de la edición de Chicago de Palas por Pistolas e inauguró Oaks of North Lawndale.
