Andrés Padilla Domene is a media artist interested in research and technology. As filmmaker and videographer, his works stand at the border between documentation and documentary.
Iván Puig Domene is an interdisciplinary artist whose work is influenced by his observations of the social environment and connected through a critical perspective and sense of humor.
SEFT-1 (Sonda de Exploración Ferroviaria Tripulada) [Abandoned Railways Exploration Probe] is a trans-disciplinary project centered around a futuristic, artist-designed vehicle, or probe, that is equipped to move both on land and rail. SEFT-1 was created collaboratively by Iván Puig Domene and Andrés Padilla Domene to traverse and explore the abandoned railways throughout Mexico. In 1995, the Mexico National Rail Network was privatized and the passenger service was cancelled, as it was said not to be profitable. Almost 900 kilometers of rail line were left idle and many communities became isolated. Traveling with the SEFT-1 in 2010, the artists were able to map the history of development and industrialization through the rise of the rail system, and trace the decline of modernity’s promise through the abandonment of that same rail system.
The artists, operating as “railnauts,”explored how the ideology of progress is imprinted onto historic landscapes and reflected on the two poles of the social experience of technology: use and obsolescence. Influenced by the aesthetics of space travel and evoking a historic futurism, their journeys led them to discover modern ruins as places and systems left behind in the recent past, not due to a lack of functionality, but for a range of political and economic reasons.
Often arriving unannounced in rural settlements, the artists used their journey to strike up dialogues and act as a shuttle for stories and questions about the people and places that make up the history of the rail system, privatized development, and its socio-cultural consequences. During the SEFT-1 run, the crew engaged in reflective and creative archeological processes, which took the shape of physical, photographic, sound, and other forms of samples.

SEFT-1 (Sonda de Exploración Ferroviaria Tripulada) es un proyecto transdisciplinario centrado en un objeto artístico diseñado como vehículo, o sonda futurista, equipado para moverse tanto en tierra como sobre el ferrocarril. SEFT-1 fue creado en colaboración por Iván Puig Domene y Andrés Padilla Domene para recorrer y explorar los ferrocarriles abandonados en todo México. En 1995, la Red Nacional de Ferrocarriles de México fue privatizada y el servicio de pasajeros cancelado, ya que se declaró como no rentable. Casi 900 kilómetros de líneas férreas quedaron inactivas y muchas comunidades quedaron aisladas. Viajando con SEFT-1 en 2010, pudieron trazar un mapa de la historia del desarrollo y la industrialización en México a través del auge del sistema ferroviario y rastrear el declive de la promesa de la modernidad a través del abandono de la red de rieles.
Los artistas, que operan como Ferronautas, exploran cómo la ideología del progreso se imprime en los paisajes históricos y se refleja en los dos polos de la experiencia social de la tecnología: uso y obsolescencia. Influidos por la estética de los viajes espaciales y evocando un futurismo histórico, sus viajes los llevaron a descubrir ruinas modernas como lugares y sistemas olvidados en el pasado reciente, no por falta de funcionalidad, sino por una serie de razones políticas y económicas.
A menudo llegando a los asentamientos rurales sin previo aviso, los artistas utilizaron su viaje para entablar diálogos con sus pobladores y actuar como un transbordador de historias y preguntas sobre las personas y lugares que componen la historia del sistema ferroviario, el desarrollo privatizado y sus consecuencias socioculturales. Durante el desarrollo de SEFT-1, la tripulación participó en procesos arqueológicos reflexivos y creativos que tomaron la forma de muestras físicas, fotográficas, sonido y otros tipos.
