ENGLISH:

Following [Paulo] Freire, it is important to engage communities on equal footing as part of this process: developing platforms where participants (ourselves included) have a sense of being both teachers and students always and already-engaging not just to listen and learn, but to speak and to teach.” – Cog•nate Collective

Since 2010, Tijuana-Los Angeles based artists and researchers Misael Diaz and Amy Sanchez-Arteaga have collaborated as Cog•nate Collective, developing community-based research projects, public interventions, and experimental pedagogical programs in the Southern California and the Northern Mexico border region.

MICA (Mobile Institute for Citizenship + Art) is a camper transformed into a nomadic art platform that promotes social and cultural exchange with/in migrant communities throughout the Tijuana-Los Angeles border region. When sited in public or informal markets, MICA serves as the hub for activities of research and intervention, which Cog•nate Collective facilitates in order to investigate the intersection of transnational economic and cultural networks through such markets. Through this collection of activities, the MAP (Mobile Agora Project), experiments with strategies to amplify, mobilize, and/or hack these networks to create points of resonance and political solidarity between spaces and communities.

With such gestures, MICA (MAP) invites publics to consider the parameters by which citizenship is/can be (re)constituted in a moment when national boundaries, like the US/Mexico border, are simultaneously erased by economic policies and increased by militarization. Cog•nate Collective seeks to transform these sites (and the greater border region) into incubators for reimagining ways of understanding and enacting citizenship in spite of national delimitations.
