Joyce Hwang

Buffalo, New York

Joyce Hwang founded Ants of the Prairie to develop creative approaches to confronting the pleasures and horrors of contemporary ecologies. Ants of the Prairie has designed pavilions for bats, bees, rats, and other species traditionally considered anathema to human comfort. By working outside the human experience, Ants of the Prairie recasts the subject of design in the service of a population with, very literally, no political voice.

Ants of the Prairie will exhibit an ongoing survey of animal habitats in and around SAIC’s campus; a graphic treatment to the glass in the gallery windows that will prevent birds from striking it; and examples of research into wall sections that encourage animal habitation.
