Eric Ellingsen

Chicago, Illinois

Eric Ellingsen founded Species of Space in 2009; at the same time he took up the Directorship of the Institute for Spatial Experiments, an experimental art and design school founded by Olafur Elliason in Berlin. Through practice and teaching, Species of Space explores sensory perception, poetic urbanism, and the structural and material properties of twisted rope. Confounding our reliance on human perception, Species of Space invites new definitions of subjectivity based on nondominant senses.

Species of Space will construct a workshop space in the Sullivan Galleries, which will host programs with visiting artists and lectures by Ellingsen, who is SAIC’s 2015–16 Mitchell Visiting Professor. Using a series of experimental stations involving human perception as teaching tools, Species of Space will curate weekly walks encouraging participants to adjust their perception of the city of Chicago.
