Ranging in materials from graphite to watercolor, acrylic, or oil paint, my work emphasizes gestural mark making that conveys figures in movement. Often quick drawings become inspiration for larger paintings. Source images are stills that I find on the internet. By painting the images expressively and ambiguously I leave room for questions of content and form to arise. Artists who have influenced my work include filmmakers Jane Campion and Catherine Breillat, and painters, Joan Brown, Lisa Yuskavage, and Eric Fischl. These artists, among many others, explore the intersection and duality of femininity and masculinity. My source material was initially related to pornography. By abstracting and reconstituting these images I aim to reinterpret desire and connote a female experience. I choose images that I can manipulate and alter to create a unique representation of the female experience and allow for a more fluid, inclusive reading of female sexuality.
