Taniel Morales is a multi-disciplinary artist and educator working in radio, theater, performance, video, and sound art since the early 1990s.
Palabra Viva [Living Word]understands speech as an ecosystem, a system in equilibrium where words are nourished by one another. The project takes the form of a glossary where each word is defined in Los Angeles and Mexico City, comparing the differences and coincidences between two communities.
The resulting glossary is a formal resource, a document with superimposed maps of both cities, and a QR system that allows listeners to engage with audio stories from interviews with activists and artistic communities.
Palabra Viva stems from Morales’s experience with low-intensity radios of the 1994 Zapatista movement, and its resonance within critical movements of Los Angeles. The research developed from journeys through the cities and from specific interviews with activists, militants, and artistic communities. For the project, Morales was also a visiting artist in a class taught by Michele Jacquis in the Creative Action Integrated Learning Program at Otis College of Art and Design where they explored the possibiliities of radio as a medium.

Taniel Morales es una artista y educador multidisciplinario que trabaja en radio, teatro, performance, video y arte sonoro desde principios de la década de 1990.
Palabra Viva entiende el habla como un ecosistema, un sistema en equilibrio donde las palabras se nutren entre sí. El proyecto toma la forma de un glosario donde cada palabra se define desde Los Ángeles y la Ciudad de México, comparando las diferencias y coincidencias entre estas dos comunidades. El glosario resultante es un recurso formal, un documento con mapas superpuestos de ambas ciudades y un sistema QR que permiteal visitante interactuar con historias de audio creadas a partir de entrevistas a activistas y comunidades artísticas.
Palabra Viva surge de la experiencia de Morales con radios de baja intensidad del movimiento zapatista de 1994 y su resonancia con los movimientos críticos de Los Ángeles. La investigación se desarrolló a partir de viajes a través de las ciudades y de entrevistas específicas con activistas, militantes y comunidades artísticas. Para el proyecto, Morales fue un artista visitante en una clase impartida por Michele Jacquis en el Creative Action Integrated Learning Program en Otis College of Art and Design, donde exploraron las posibilidades de la radio como medio.
