Under global capitalism, one’s sense of self is crippled. We look to peers and marketing to tell us how to dress, how to behave, how to feel, what to think, who to be. We are constantly policing one another through social media, seeking merely to be accepted as we conform to the expectations and preferences of social groups. Thus, rather than create the Self, we rely on others to help define the Self. Though seemingly diaristic, the stories I share through video convey a common neurosis. They center around interpersonal difficulties that arise out of a precarious sense of self, like the depersonalized self developed under capitalism. Through visual storytelling, my goal is to encourage introspection and critical thinking about accountability and self-actualization so that we may grow a deeper sense of empathy towards one another.
