May 5, 2017, 5:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
SAIC Sullivan Galleries, 33 S State St, 7th Floor

Exactly one week after the MFA Show opening reception, we look to the holiday of Cinco de Mayo as inspiration to explore the complexities of cultural identity embodied across borders. Join us for Passing & Crossing, as artists, scholars, and visitors participate in a series of facilitated roving dialogues and performances, collectively occupying the discursive spaces between the works.

Led by art historian and SAIC faculty member Rhoda Rosen, artist Renluka Maharaj and designer Andrew Pacheco discuss navigating issues of racial passing, border politics, and the aesthetics of the border. Continuing the conversation, SAIC Arts Administration graduate student Libia Bianibi will lead artist panelists Oscar Gonzalez, Nuria Montiel, and Melissa Leandro in a discussion on the appropriation of craft and culturally-specific motifs in contemporary art. The evening will conclude with a performance of deconstruction by Adela Goldbard and collaborators, to be followed by tamales and music.

Organized by Graduate Curatorial Fellows Hannah Pivo, Adela Goldbard, and Kate Sherman in collaboration with the 2017 MFA Show Curatorial Teams.
