The Hysteric’s Workout takes a look at the historical construction of the woman’s body in Western culture and its current repercussions. The female body (as well as the poor’s body, and the colonial body) was written as a site of sin before the enlightenment, and science pathologized it in the nineteenth century with the figure of the hysteric. Thus, this is an exercise of discipline and desire. This workout aims to train and manipulate the physique of the artist. Every exercise is a hysterical gesture that connects her body to a lineage of bodies that have tried to manipulate their personas to better fit socially, or have rebelled to societal norms.
