My most recent project draws from the recent growth and the popularity of the so-called “Korean wave,” a series of Korean cultural products intended for the international market, which is funded by the Korean government. My work looks into its melodramatic cliches, strange form of censorship, and cultural appropriation. I seek to give a certain twist to the materials that I appropriate. In doing so, my work attempts to challenge the production of spectacle and examine ways in which the nation state of Korea presents itself from the perspective of the Korean artist working overseas.
