Exhibition Statement as Preserved in the SUGS/SITE Archives:

Sculptural objects and performing bodies function as sites for resistance and reclamation through the appropriation of the symbols, materials, and frameworks of systems in which the body is the primary focus of control. The rejection of the categorical identity of mother happens in different ways–ranging from the termination of a pregnancy to a postpartum reconstruction of selfhood. Though essential to each individual artist’s work this autobiographical distinction is withheld from the viewer, challenging the normative standards and dualistic approaches commonly applied to human sexuality and reproduction.
