Hyeyoon Jung & Yeoreum Summer Shin

Exhibition Statement as Preserved in the INCUBATOR Archives:

“On Wanting” is a joint exhibition between Hyeyoon Jung and Yeoreum Summer Shin that interrogates how ephemerality is shifted through individual consciousness. Reflecting on past tribulations as well as future hopes and aspirations, both Jung and Shin discuss the pursuit of safety through their work. Jung draws from her unconscious mind in an attempt to portray her lived experience, rather than to depress anybody. Her bird-like figures and protective personas fight to control, dissolve, or coexist peacefully together in their shared psychologically warped landscapes. Shin’s paintings delicately render folktale figures and charms of auspiciousness. Her paintings recontextualize repetition in culturally specific symbols and tokens of good fortune.

Jung and Shin use dreams and aspirations to transform ordinary experiences with mundane, everyday environments into immersive visual worlds where the mind’s influence is a colorful, symbolic, and emotive reimagination of the world around them. On Wanting creates a liminal visual space for viewers to investigate the tension in their own lives between creative imagination and fear; self-exploration and disguise; and spiritual and physical realities.
