Exhibition Statement as Preserved in the INCUBATOR Archives:

Historically and contemporaneously, Black people in the United States have created and sustained love spaces of various kinds: the Church, the barbershop, the kitchen, the playground. Love spaces collapse the spectacular into the mundane, and operate fundamentally as sites of transformation. These spaces are ephemeral institutions, necessarily mutable yet grounded in love.

 

We invite all who enter this space to think about sacred spaces and the techniques used to build them. As a collective we use bell hooks’ seminal work “All About Love” as a sacred text that evokes the radical possibilities of Black Sacred Space. The exhibition exists in what she calls “a love ethic”, which is “showing care, respect, knowledge, integrity, and the will to cooperate.” In thinking about love as a space, we are interested in love as an action and a technique through which we can create, think about and sustain space (especially within white capitalist institutions where we are often forced to operate in lack). Elements, creations, objects, and happenings have been collected here to show our love ethic over the past year.
