Exhibition Statement as Preserved in the INCUBATOR Archives:
Emerging technologies continue to develop and progress the ways in which individuals communicate and hide their personal thoughts, ideas, and information. Jade Sheng (MFA ’22) and Mac Pierce (MFA ’23) investigate this expression through the intersection of coding language and art through their digital and tangible form. Each artist incorporates various forms of newly developed software into their practice, while examining how it can be used to communicate words and visual forms. Sheng questions the ambivalent boundaries between art and design through the implementation of simulated poetry pieces, whose automated programming scrambles each passing word. Emerging technologies also become the subject of concern, as Pierce draws from the imagery and methodology used in ransomware attacks that restrict user access to crucial data. Collectively, their work employs emerging technology as a vehicle for the complicated expression of language and content.
