Ariel J. Cobbert

Exhibition Statement as Preserved in the SUGS/SITE Archives:

At the heart of Ariel J. Cobbert’s practice is what she calls capturing the exhale. Quiet,
unperformed moments where peace is found in solitude and safety. Presence that isn’t about
presentation, but simply about existing. Working across photography, Cobbert draws on family
archives, vernacular aesthetics, and the everyday rituals of Black Southern life. Her work
investigates how Black life has been recorded, and how it has been obscured.

 

The exhibition anchors a body of work built on a singular truth. Black people in the South didn’t
just survive, they thrived. Cobbert’s work challenges the narrative that Black existence in the
South can only be linked to violence. Instead, it offers an archive of fullness, rest, and joy, even
as it acknowledges the erasure that has always worked against it.
