Exhibition Statement as Preserved in the SUGS/SITE Archives:

In the context of everyday conversation, we embellish our language with idioms, expressions, and figures of speech. To the non-native speaker, these patterns become confusing or just silly. To those who are familiar, worlds of meaning are opened up with the utterance of a simple phrase. As a painter, Silas Dilworth considers this premise in the context of his medium. His diptychs of dictionary illustrations mine the semiotic freedom that art provides, testing the flexibility we all demonstrate when it comes to differentiating what we say from what we really mean.
