Exhibition Statement as Preserved in the SUGS/SITE Archives:
“Because it lives between the individual and the surrounding world. clothing has much to say about the relationship between them. Clothing is an accumulation of evidence; both from choices about what the wearer wishes to hide or reveal and what gets revealed or hidden regardless. The corset, because of its important place in the long history of human beings’ (particularly womens’) voluntary manipulation of their bodies is well-suited as a point of entry into such an exploration. All of the pieces included in this exhibition are contemporary wearable corsets. Together they raise questions about the nature of constraint and objectification, whether physical, sexual emotional or spiritual.”
