Exhibition Statement as Preserved in the SUGS/SITE Archives:

Amy Schleser (BFA 2011) presents a body of work investigating the rationales for art education in state-supported schools. Some educators are turning to arts integration (teaching art in the context of other school subjects) to show that art is a valuable academic resource. However, other educators worry that arts integration can weaken the argument for art as its own discipline. In Art i Hard!, Schleser explores the current educational trend towards interdisciplinary instruction, specifically the integration of art with math and science. Art is Hard! showcases Schleser’s artist’s books and printed matter that addresses art education’s relationship to scientific and mathematical instruction within American public school; playing with the misconception that art and math are incompatible.
