Exhibition Statement as Preserved in the SUGS/SITE Archives:

Buttermilk Biscuits is an exhibition of new work by Morgan Richardson (MFA ’16) offering a satirical and perverse response to issues of gender oppression, sexuality and hegemonic culture under systematic, American hetero-patriarchy. In Buttermilk Biscuits, Richardson emphasizes humor and play while presenting a poetic depiction of her daily lived experience. She approaches art making through a lens of raw materiality and intuitive espression. Richardson is interested in topics of anti-assimilation, failure, the unwanted, and the creation of an abject untopia. her work investigates the societal process of othering. Individuals are rendered as less human than normative subjects, based on societal markers such as race, class, gender, sexuality, ability and nationality. In this exhibition, by using craft materials (such as ceramics and fiber) and vessel forms, Richardson critiques societal norms and expectations, while rejecting artistic hierarchy. Buttermilk Biscuits embraces a childlike aesthetic, while investigating vacant sentimentaity and systematic hierarchy. Throughout her work, one can find a glimpse of hope for the future, and a belief in the strength and optimism of individuality.

SUGs/SITE statement as perserved by the archive:

“In Wet Sponge, Mothergirl channel the semi-organix forms and abstracted sentimentality of Morgan Richardson’s ceramic work. Mothergirl perform in and on the sculpted landscape of two large, wet, sponges. Then environment is friendly yet uncanny; the play is boundless and joyful. Mothergirl (Katy Albert and Sophia Hamilton) is a Chicago based performance duo whose work has taken the form of installation, durational event, and guided audience interaction. They have performed at Rapid Pulse International Performance Art Festival, Out of Site, MCA Chicago, AUX Gallery (Philedelphia), and Mobius (Boston).”
