Brett Layne

Exhibition Statement as Preserved in the SUGS/SITE Archives:

The collection of photographs included in Brett Layne’s (BFA 2013) exhibition question what it means to be openly gay in the setting of a modern family. Through the presentation of two distinctly different bodies of work, Layne addresses assumption and sickness, culled from his personal encounter with pneumonia, mistakenly interpreted as AIDS. This lapse in understanding is accentuated by the disparate relationship between the two bodies of work, one of hyper-sexuality, and another of the artist’s family dynamic, integrated for purpose of this installation.
