Exhibition Statement as Preserved in the SUGS/SITE Archives:
“The theme of this show is textiles and their inherent relationship to the family, namely to maternal figures. Fiber carries its own history within its basic presence. Fiber is the only tangile medium that carries time, experience, and memory; and which can be physically experienced whenever the need to be comforted by a memory arises. We all have a relationship with fiber because it is closest to our skin: clothing, towels, blankets and bedding fill the needs of our daily lives. The idea of heirlooms juxtaposed with modern materials such as latex and video creates entirely new meanings that question the relationships within the family structures. To remove the cloth and examine it and its meanings is one of the investigations that we as artists are taking on.”
