Exhibition Statement as Preserved in the SUGS/SITE Archives:
Focusing on the affective, historical, and imagined topographies of the Florida Everglades, Jessica Bardsley explores the poetics and politics of archival materials, as well as relationships between moving and still images. Tourists’ photographs from the early 20th century and taxidermies alligators meet with repurposed film footage and souvenirs to meditate on ties between colonialism, development, and tourism in the south of Florida. Inspired by a critical tradition of southern gothic fiction, Florida Enchantments questions how we come to understand and feel the traces of history in the current moment.
