Exhibition Statement as Preserved in the SUGS/SITE Archives:
“lookseewatch”, faces some of the issues that are relevant to the use of the female figure in photographs. Artists Sarah Hicks, Yuki Kokubo, and Keli Lemoi, use the self as subject and model, to raise questions about the control of the artist as the object and maker of the image. “What is the role of the gaze when the photographs are taken by women? Is sexuality imposed on the subject by the viewer or is it handed to the audience by the will of the artist? Are these images driven by narcissism and vanity, or are they dealing with questions of our own femininity and sexual identity?”
