Exhibition Statement as Preserved in the SUGS/SITE Archives:

With one critical eye on history and another on the post-petroleum future, Liz Ensz (MFA 2013) examines brazen icons of American identity. Our culture, social hierarchy, daily ritual, national infrastructure and notion of freedom have been designed around the symbol of unstoppable power that the Jeep Cherokee represents. Combined with representations of golden nuggets, and emblematic western romantic panoramas, New World Landscapes ruminates on our national identity’s link to a stolen, altered land that bares the imprint of dependence on a precarious, self-instituted keystone. Manifest Destiny has become a philosophic gaze toward an ever-widening horizon, for on a sphere, West is endless.
