Exhibition Statement as Preserved in the SUGS/SITE Archives:

“The focus of the Advanced Computer Imaging Summer Institute, taught by Katharine Schutta and Chris Johnson, was the development of imagery both inside and outside the computer. The Canon color laser copier allowed for expeditious and continuous experimentation. Students used the Canon as a printing press, darkroom, and/or loom. Images created from photos, scans, Photoshop and Painter were given physical presence.
Output was an integral part of the image making process. Issues of scale and tactile qualities were able to be discussed and explored. The Canon in conjunction with various materials allowed the artist to create objects outside the computer. Images were developed within the computer, then printed, manipulated, and scanned back into the computer for even further manipulation. In this way, a dialogue has been created between traditional and digital mediums.
This exhibition represents a journey from the students’ mind, through the Canon, to completed works beyond the box.”
