Exhibition Statement as Preserved in the SUGS/SITE Archives:

Using figuration as a springboard for production, Drew Olivo (MFA 2013), Alice Tippit (MFA 2013), and Autumn Ramsey (MFA 2013) combine each of their three distinct painting languages to pictorially and physically challenge notions of the body. Each artist recollects histories of genre and style in painting to define their respective practices. Whether through Tippit’s immaculate surfaces exploring relationships between color and form in a vocabulary distinctly graphic and hierarchical, Olivo’s references to color field and the grid, or Ramsey’s crude and gestural depictions of Surrealist and grotesquely form caricatures – these artists question what it means to ‘read’ painting, as a language both autonomously and collectively crafted.
