Exhibition Statement as Preserved in the SUGS/SITE Archives:
Film represents a separate reality. Through film, we can experience millions of moments we otherwise wouldn’t have. When culled from their context, these moments can take on a new meaning, and also trigger memories. In the Installation Whales to Wolves, Julian Wayser represents the memory of film as a collective consciousness. His video installation bombards the viewer with appropriated images that force the viewer to make instantaneous decisions, to decide which of the thousands of cuts they will carry out with them. By arranging these images, a jagged chronology is developed based in instinctive movement alone.
In addition to the video, the installation includes an alternative method of memory-that which we experience in stills. His photographs portray uninhabited landscapes. They provide a counterpoint to the film that can be viewed over a longer period of time. His sculptural vessels serve as a metaphor for a container of experience. The element of found adds to the atomosphere of the piece creating an internal environment.
