INCUBATOR

In 2019, the Graduate Curatorial Assistants working with the Assistant Director formalized exhibition opportunities for students to show work in non-gallery and interstitial spaces across campus. The INCUBATOR spaces offer room to experiment and engage in exhibition making from new and creative approaches.

INCUBATOR, a division of the Department of Exhibitions and Exhibition Studies, gives currently enrolled undergraduate, graduate, Low-Res, and post-bacc SAIC students opportunities to share their work across campus in non-traditional exhibition formats. These alternative spaces offer room to engage in exhibition-making from new and creative approaches. We encourage students to use INCUBATOR as an opportunity for experimentation and to share your practice with the SAIC community.

INCUBATOR is run by a team of graduate curatorial assistants working for the Department of Exhibitions and Exhibition Studies who facilitate independently submitted student proposals and lead collaborative curatorial projects.

Sharp INCUBATOR Spaces

The Wabash window, the first floor lobby of the Sharp Building, and the 280 “Nook” are the primary spaces designated for INCUBATOR projects. We encourage current SAIC students from all degree programs to apply for our two to three exhibition slots during the fall and spring semesters through SlideRoom. Please follow us at @saic.incubator to learn more on when to apply and check out the “Get Involved” page under INCUBATOR.

Applying during the Fall semester means you will be considered for an exhibition in the Spring Semester. If you apply during the Spring Semester you will be considered for the Fall Semester.

To be eligible: you must be an enrolled student at SAIC at the time you are applying and the time you will be considered for an exhibition. Unfortunately, alumni, faculty or staff may not apply. If the main contact submitting an application is a student during these times, they can curate artists who are not enrolled at SAIC. They can also curate faculty and staff in their exhibition. Although this is allowed, please remember that INCUBATOR focuses on and prioritizes student artwork and voices.

The SlideRoom applications are reviewed by the INCUBATOR team, along with the faculty and staff on the Exhibition and Exhibition Studies Committee.

Other INCUBATOR Spaces

To show your work in our other INCUBATOR space please reach out to Assistant Director of Exhibition & Staff Advisor for INCUBATOR.

SAIC does not hold any insurance for artwork installed on campus. Please note that if you install your work on the SAIC campus, you are doing so at your own risk.

ATTENTION: It is the responsibility of the student(s) and faculty to install and de-install their work and return the space as they found it. Students must provide their own hardware and tools for approved independent projects. The INCUBATOR team will provide floor plans, reserve and provide access to the space. The INCUBATOR team will patch and paint the exhibition spaces.
