Exhibition Statement as Preserved in the SUGS/SITE Archives:

In Surface Tension Matthew Schlagbaum (MFA 2011) presents a body of work examining his personal notions of manhood and masculinity as they have been affected by his relationship with his father. Combining photographic and sculptural strategies, Schlagbaum subtly manipulates found objects to reveal the gendered and hierarchical ways in which we tend to read certain materials. Schlagbaum’s photographs map these material explorations onto the body to reveal the constructed nature of identity and challenge the dominant maleness, masculinity, and heterosexuality.
