Exhibition Statement as Preserved in the SUGS/SITE Archives:
Recipes for Madelines brings together artists Fabienne Elie (MFA 2018), Helen Lee (MFA 2018), Yan Zhoi (MFA 2015), and Ornella Fieres, whose works critically engage the relationship between nostalgia and media. Although nostalgia as a psychological, social and political phenomenon has existed for centuries, the current emergence of nostalgic aethestics starts to constitute nostologia as a contemporary condition, a side-effect of technological advancement and political uneasiness. By opening up a discussion around our contemporary experiences of remebering, this exhibition serves as an oppurtunity to reflect upon the role of media not only as a platform for reimagining the past but also as a way of working through the history for the present.
