The image of the “golden baby” is a distillation of the tension created by a watcher, or witness, wose relationship to its surroundings is often tinged with ambiguity. Through the figure’s repetition, recontextualization, and occasional absence, the “golden baby” takes on different meanings and roles, allowing the artist the chance to reflect on what exactly each image captures. This iterative process in turn creates space for Stine to examine her own varied and complex reactions to the subject matter.
